Two-Way Truce Can Improve Health Care

May 23rd, 2011

Last week, 42 freshman House Members sent a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to stop Democrats from employing “Mediscare” tactics on them and their colleagues for their votes in support of Rep. Paul Ryans (R-Wis.) Medicare proposal and other health care policy changes.

Lots of columnists, pundits and pols hooted at this, given that most of the freshmen had run for their jobs by treating the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, as a piñata, railing against death panels and its burn-and-slash approach to Medicare, which in turn had rallied senior support to the GOP cause.

I could hoot at the hypocrisy, too, even as I wish we could tone down the rhetoric and find a way to actually have–I shudder to use the hackneyed phrase, but will–an “adult conversation” about the urgent need to find some common ground on health care reform. Som

Even Families With Insurance Put Off Or Go Without Care Because ‘It Costs Too Much To Be Healthy’

April 29th, 2011

The high cost of health care is deterring parents from taking their children to the doctor or buying prescription medication, regardless of how much money they make or whether they have health insurance, according to a study to be presented Sunday, May 2, at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting in Denver.

Previous research has shown that families who have difficulty paying their medical bills may delay or forgo needed care. In this study, researchers sought to determine factors that affect families’ decisions to put off or go without care, including the cost of health care relative to a family’s income and having a child with a physical, social, behavioral or cognitive limitation such as asthma, autism or obesity. New State Scorecard On Children’s Health Care Finds Wide Geographic Disparities

February 4th, 2011

Two years after the reauthorization and expansion of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), a new Commonwealth Fund state-by-state scorecard evaluating how the health care system is working for children finds that federal and state action on behalf of children has helped preserve, and even expand, health coverage for this group, despite the severe recession. Yet wide differences persist among states when it comes to health insurance coverage, affordability of health care for families, children’s receipt of preventive care and treatment, and the opportunity for children to lead healthy lives. Health Care Reform Prepares for Attacks as the Republicans Take the House

January 9th, 2011

On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed legislation that overhauled Americas health care system. The new law, which is also known as the Affordable Care Act, enacts comprehensive health insurance reform that will be rolled out in the United States over the next four years with most of the major changes taking place by 2014.

Health care reform guarantees access to medical insurance for tens of millions of Americans who previously had no health insurance. But, passing the new law was not without bumps along the road; not a single Republican member of Congress voted for the final version of the health care bill.
