Student Contents Insurance: Do Students Need Home Contents Cover?
July 21st, 2010
Some students may need to take out home contents insurance when they go to college or university. When does a student need to insure their belongings?
Many students will take valuable possessions to college or university and making sure to have some form of insurance cover in place may be vital. In some cases, a student may already be given some protection, either from their parents or from a hall of residence deal. In others, they may need to take out their own policies. Who needs to buy their own student contents insurance?
Can Students Use Their Parents Home Contents Insurance?
In a few cases a parental home insurance policy may be able to give cover to children, even if they are living away from home. Not all policies will allow this, however, and students should get their parents to check if their belongings will be protected. Some home policies that will include students may also set restrictions which could make them less useful.
For example, a policy may set a limit on how much money can be allocated to “away from home” cover. This is usually set as a percentage of the sum that the parents have used to insure their own contents. Checking that this will be enough money to cover all of the student’s belongings may be wise. Some insurers may also insist that students must bring home all their possessions at the end of each term to qualify under parental policies.
Do Halls of Residence Offer Contents Insurance for Students?
It is becoming increasingly common for colleges and universities in the UK to include contents insurance in their halls and residence fees. This may mean that a student gets cover as part of their accommodation charges and won’t need to take it out separately. It is, however, still worth checking the actual policy out rather than assuming that it will be OK.

Finding the Cheapest Student Travel Insurance Finding the cheapest student travel insurance policy may help save money. Choosing the right product, investigating discounts & deals and comparing costs may be useful. There may, for example, be limits given on cover or claims that could make automatic halls policies less effective. This is especially important for students that own a lot of expensive equipment (i.e. laptops, sports equipment, music players). Those moving into a hall of residence that does not offer home insurance can take out a standard contents policy or a specialist halls policy from student insurers if they prefer.
Do Students Living in Rented Accommodation Need Home Contents Insurance?
A student living in a privately rented flat or house is likely to need to buy their own contents insurance, unless they can be covered by a parental policy. Some will buy a general home policy; others may use specialist student insurers such as Endsleigh.
In either case, it is worth shopping around and using an insurance supermarket site to make sure to get the cheapest deal. Although specialist student insurance may be the most cost-effective solution for many, a general policy may work out to be cheaper in some cases and a quick online comparison could help save money.
