Today’s News: More Life Insurers Subpoenaed, Young Drivers Have Higher Crash Rates and 1 in 5 Californians Uninsured

The New York State Attorney General has subpoenaed more life insurance companies, a new report shows that young drivers have significantly higher auto accident rates and one in five California residents are go without health insurance.
More Life Insurers Subpoenaed
Recently, New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced that he would be opening a fraud investigation that looked into how life insurance companies were paying out their benefits. At the time, he had already subpoenaed Prudential Financial and MetLife on suspicion that the companies may had been retaining beneficiary funds in company-controlled accounts instead of paying out lump sums as agreed.
Now, more companies have been subpoenaed for the investigation, including Genworth Financial Inc., Unum Group, Guardian Life Insurance, New York Life Insurance Co. and

Some Mass. Residents Fight Individual Mandate For Health Insurance, N.J. Delays Implementation Of Law Requiring Outpatient Mental Health Treatment

Health News Florida: “A former hospital executive has accused Naples-based Health Management Associates of offering money, free rent and private jet trips to entice doctors to refer Medicare patients to the company’s hospitals. … In a whistleblower lawsuit unsealed Aug. 2 by a federal judge, former hospital CEO J. Michael Mastej also accused his former employer of filing fraudulent claims on services HMA’s facilities provided the ill-gotten Medicare patients. … HMA presently operates approximately 56 hospitals in 15 states….. HMA addressed the lawsuit last week in its quarterly report with the following statement: ‘We continue to review this recently unsealed complaint and we intend to vigorously defend Health Management and its subsidiary against the allegations in this matter’” (Wells, 8/10).

California Supreme Court Prohibits Senior Citizens from Trebling Damages

The California Supreme Court has ruled that plaintiffs may not seek treble damages under the state’s Unfair Competition Law, and instead can only seek remedies to injunction and restitution.
According to court documents in Clark v. Superior Court (National Western Life Insurance Co.), a group of senior citizens sued National Western Marine Life Insurance Co.

Search For Meaning In Missouri’s Rejection Of Health Law Provision

Republicans are holding up a Missouri ballot measure, which voters approved with 71% support, to reject a key health overhaul provision as evidence that the public does not like the law, The Washington Post reports. “Supporters of the overhaul played down the vote, noting that it has no practical impact and that Tuesday’s electorate was largely Republican. But they conceded that a lack of public support could make it hard to put the law into practice.” Missouri primary voters were the first to weigh in on the law in a popular vote, but other states, including Virginia, have passed laws seeking to block its implementation (MacGillis, 8/5).
